Work & Career

Job interviews, workplace conversations, professional small talk.

What learners practise

Work conversations, especially job interviews, combine several skills learners need at B1: listening for specific information, reacting politely and producing structured answers. The exercise on this page presents a short interview with typical questions about experience, strengths and availability.

Run the dialogue as a model first. Then ask learners to repeat each answer aloud, focusing on sentence stress and intonation. After the comprehension check, learners prepare short answers about themselves using the same prompts. Record their answers in the generator at a slow speed so weaker students can hear each model again.

Listening skills and classroom ideas

  • Catch key phrases in interview questions such as Tell me about, Why, How long.
  • Recognise soft self-noun answers with I have worked, I am good at, I am available.
  • Notice polite closings and follow-up questions at the end of the dialogue.
  • After the task, learners record their own two-question mock interview in the generator.
