Weekend & Free Time
Plans, invitations, what people do in their free time.
What learners practise
Weekend conversations introduce the going to future in a context learners care about. The exercise on this page uses informal language between two friends who share plans, accept and decline invitations and settle on a time and a place.
Before listening, ask each learner to write down one real weekend plan. Run the audio twice: once for gist, once for the time and place. After checking, swap plans with a partner and role-play an invitation that includes one acceptance and one polite refusal.
Listening skills and classroom ideas
- Follow informal invitations, suggestions and responses in the second person.
- Recognise the going to future in short affirmative and negative statements.
- Catch time phrases such as on Saturday, around three, in the afternoon.
- After the task, learners invite a partner to a new activity and accept or decline.
Exercises 1
- Seguir invitaciones, propuestas y respuestas informales.
- Captar expresiones de tiempo: on Saturday, around three, in the afternoon.
