What learners practise

Shopping dialogues cover high-frequency language learners meet on day one abroad: numbers, weights, prices and polite requests. The exercise on this page uses a supermarket scene where a customer asks for help and discusses quantities.

Before listening, hand out a small shopping list in English so learners have a reason to listen for items and amounts. Play the dialogue twice, then ask learners to mark which items from their list were mentioned. Use the audio as a model for a short role-play with new products and prices.

Listening skills and classroom ideas

  • Recognise numbers, weights and quantities in a transaction context.
  • Catch common product nouns and basic containers such as a bottle of, a kilo of.
  • Notice polite request forms: Could you help me, Do you have, Excuse me.
  • After the task, pairs role-play buying three new products with prices.
