Topic

Family & People

Talking about family members, describing people, relationships.

What learners practise

Talking about family is one of the most reliable topics at A1: vocabulary is concrete, the grammar stays simple and every student has something personal to contribute. The dialogue on this page introduces names, ages, jobs and a few family words.

Before listening, ask learners to write three facts about their own family so they have a reason to follow the model. Then run the audio twice: once for general meaning and once for the specific detail asked in the task. Finish with a short pair activity where each student describes a relative using the same structure.

Listening skills and classroom ideas

  • Recognise family vocabulary such as brother, sister, cousin and parents.
  • Catch ages and basic job nouns without relying on the transcript.
  • Notice the difference between my and his/her in short statements.
  • After the task, learners describe a family member of their own using the dialogue as a model.
